Fazel Jamil Hashimi is an archivist from Afghanistan who dedicated his career to preserving the historical documents and cultural records that hold the identity and memory of the Afghan people.

When the Taliban seized power in 2021, it became impossible for him to continue his work — or to live freely and safely. He faced the difficult decision to leave behind his home, his career, and everything familiar. With the support of AFI-ILA and other partner organizations, he was able to leave Afghanistan through the Federal Admission Programme (BAP) and begin a new chapter in Germany.

Determined to return to the field he loves, Fazel first mastered the German language, then earned a place in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage program at the University of Applied Sciences in Berlin, where he is now in his fourth semester. Step by step, he is rebuilding his academic and professional path — and continuing his lifelong commitment to protecting cultural memory.

As censorship rises and artists are targeted for speaking truth to power, protecting creative voices has never been more urgent. Together with our sister-organization Artistic Freedom Initiative (AFI), we have supported over 2,000 courageous artists who continue making art even when it places them at risk. Your contribution ensures artists can keep creating, sharing, and inspiring change—protecting both their voices and the right to artistic freedom worldwide.
