After the Taliban takeover in 2021, the women of the Simorgh Theater Collective in Afghanistan faced serious risks. As women, artists, and human rights defenders, they could no longer work freely or safely. Their situation prompted a call for support within the international theatre community.

In response, a long-term collaboration was established between AFI’s Afghan Artists Protection Project (AAPP) and the transnational theater collective KULA Compagnie. For over three years, they worked with an international network of theaters and partners to support the evacuation, legal pathways, and relocation of these artists.

Through this joint effort, twelve actresses were safely relocated to Europe. Today, they take part in theater productions across Europe — some now performing openly under their real names — and their stories reach international audiences.
