Our Work

Across borders and disciplines, Initiative pour la Liberté Artistique, together with our sister organization Artistic Freedom Initiative, champions artists facing censorship, persecution, and displacement, and advances artistic freedom through direct support, research, and advocacy.

Our mission is to protect, promote, and foster freedom of artistic expression.

Initiative pour la Liberté Artistique’s mission is to protect, promote, and foster freedom of artistic expression–a fundamental human right essential to cultural development and the functioning of a free society. When artists can express themselves freely, they contribute to the exchange of ideas and opinions, elevate social and political discourse, and play a critical role in promoting tolerance, peace and social justice.

Our programs are designed to directly assist artists whose freedom of expression has been restricted, support artists who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing positive social change and fundamental human rights, and improve the laws, policies, and systems that shape artists’ lives and work.

What We Do

Our programs provide coordinated, holistic support for artists at risk, addressing their needs at every stage—from legal protection and resettlement to public engagement and advocacy. Together, they empower artists whose freedom has been restricted, amplify those advancing positive social change, and shape the policies and systems that impact artistic expression worldwide.

Legal Services

The ability for an artist at risk to move freely and safely is often one of the first challenges they face. ILA’s legal team consists of in-house legal professionals and a network of attorneys from leading global law firms.

ILA services include representation on talent-based and performance visas, work visas, cultural exchange visas, and asylum petitions.

Global Policy & Advocacy

ILA, together with AFI,  advances global advocacy on freedom of artistic expression and cultural rights. The program engages with international and regional institutions, including the United Nations and European Union, to strengthen legal frameworks, inform policy development, and ensure that artistic freedom is recognized as a core human rights issue.

ILA contributes to key multilateral and regional processes, including UN resolutions, joint statements, domestic and regional legislative initiatives with the EU and individual countries, and Universal Periodic Review (UPR) processes, working to integrate the experiences of artists into policy and decision-making spaces.
