Initiative pour la Liberté Artistique (ILA) accepts applications from at-risk artists around the world seeking support, protection, and relocation opportunities in Europe.

For artists already in Europe, ILA also supports those who fear persecution in their home countries and are navigating displacement or seeking to rebuild their lives in safety.

In collaboration with our sister organization, Artistic Freedom Initiative (AFI), ILA may also assist artists pursuing pathways to protection beyond Europe.

Who can apply?

  • Artistas que están sufriendo catástrofes humanitarias o conflictos armados en sus países de origen.
  • Artistas que están siendo censurados por el gobierno u otras autoridades en sus países de origen.
  • Artistas que son amenazados o perseguidos por expresar sus opiniones, ideas o identidades a través del arte.

¿Quiénes se consideran artistas?

AFI interpreta el término «artista» en sentido amplio. Esto incluye, entre otros:

  • Actores
  • Periodistas creativos y fotoperiodistas
  • Cultural workers (including curators, art scholars, archivists, and conservators); and publishers or presenters of art
  • Cineastas
  • Músicos y compositores
  • Artistas escénicos
  • Artistas teatrales
  • Artistas visuales (incluidos pintores, escultores, fotógrafos, diseñadores gráficos, dibujantes y artistas de nuevos medios)
  • Writers (including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, playwrights, and screenwriters)

¿Qué se necesita para presentar la solicitud?

  1. Artistic production:
    • Los artistas en situación de riesgo deben poder demostrar un historial de producción o actuación artística.
  2. Persecution, Censorship, or Humanitarian Crises in Home Country:
    • Los solicitantes deben demostrar que:
      • En riesgo de persecución como consecuencia directa de su arte, lo cual puede demostrarse mediante antecedentes de daños físicos, temor a sufrir daños físicos en el futuro, encarcelamiento o enjuiciamiento.
      • Unable to express themselves freely through their art due to censorship by the government; or
      • Facing forced displacement, humanitarian crisis, or armed conflict.

Apply for Assistance

If you are an at-risk artist in need of assistance, please read the above Application Guide for Artists to determine whether you qualify for assistance from Initiative pour la Liberté Artistique.

To apply, at-risk artists are required to complete our application form. ILA makes an overall assessment of each applicant’s needs. To enable us to assess your application properly, please provide all the information and documentation requested in the application form. All information will be treated confidentially. You will be contacted and informed of the result of the assessment as soon as the application has been processed.
